Just Smile!

Finding Amber is a delightful story of Amber who is in the search of her birth parents. She has a steady job but detective work, even if it’s for one’s gains seems to consume more time and money than she had thought of. Thus, her decision to accept odd jobs here and there thinking she can learn on the job but is everything as easy as she assumes?

Amber was a lovely character to warm up to, she is not naive but runs headlong into things without taking full consideration of all pros and cons and hence is forced to face a lot of harsh realities, be it that searching for truth may come at a price of her own life or that being a detective could be the toughest job in the world and even that trusting a friend without collecting every detail may prove disastrous.

I loved how the author has used different situations in Amber’s life to consider her own actions and the repercussions that may follow. Arjun’s character as the most sensible and calmest influence on the face of jumping to a pot of fire by Amber was charmingly done. His rational advice to Amber reminding her to mend the rift with her adoptive parents was one of the best parts of the story and of course, having a hero who is a bookaholic was another lovely feature. There is an enigmatic feel to his character initially that makes one doubt his true intentions.

The threads of suspense regarding Amber’s birth and how she gets to meet her family are woven into the story with a clean romance. The action at the end was not the pulse-pounding, heart-racing finale that I expected but in all, Finding Amber will appeal to all fans of the romantic suspense genre.

Many thanks to the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

Excerpt

The view was beyond her expectation. The snow peaked mountains were mesmerising. They went inside the cottage to freshen up. Lunch buffet was laid out in the garden. All of them sat down hungry from their long hike. Then she saw him. He was not with them in the van. He looked scary, huge, and taller than Rohit with jet black hair tied in a small ponytail and a full beard. Rohit told her he must be with the organisers who manage this event. Then she got distracted with what everyone was talking about.

After lunch, they lazed around outside till sunset when it got chilly and they went inside. Drinks had been laid out for everyone with snacks. Loud music was playing with dim lights. All of them started dancing and drinking, Rohit held Amber’s hand and took her inside to dance. Suddenly the room became small as there were twenty people dancing, she felt claustrophobic. No one changed clothes. She tried to talk to Rohit but he was busy dancing and music was too loud for her to make him listen. After a while, things quietened down, few people sat down, she relaxed, had a few drinks, and forgot about why she was there.

Amber could hear her phone ring, when she saw who it was, she immediately picked it up and looked for privacy. She signalled to Rohit who gestured her to go upstairs. There was only one room there, she opened the door and saw people inside. She went past them, opened the bathroom door, and locked herself in. She switched on the light, saw it was clean and sat down with a sigh. She couldn’t believe herself; everyone was enjoying except her. Then she remembered why she came, called back and then freshened up.

Amber opened the bathroom door to an empty room. Something didn’t seem right. There was no music playing, no sound at all. She hurried downstairs to find no one. She called out Rohit’s name but there was no answer. She opened the main door and the chill air breezed inside. She immediately closed it when a hand touched her shoulder.

“AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH” Amber screamed and turned around.

“Calm down,” said the Stranger backing away.

“Where is everyone?” Amber asked sitting down on the floor.

“There was a weather emergency so everyone was asked to leave or else they would get stuck here for a while. Rohit looked for you but couldn’t find you, he asked me to look after you as he had an urgent meeting on Monday and couldn’t afford to stay back.”

“I’m sorry, did you say, ‘stuck here for a while’.”
